What is a portafilter machine?

With a portafilter machine you put ground coffee into a basket that sits in a handle (the portafilter) and lock it into the machine. The machine forces hot water under pressure through the coffee grounds. The amount and tamping pressure of the coffee influence the taste, so preparing it takes some practice. On most entry-level models the milk is frothed by hand with a steam wand.

What should beginners look for when buying?

  • Size: how much space does your kitchen have? Some models are very narrow.
  • Heat-up time: depending on the heating system, the machine is ready after different lengths of time. The manufacturer's figure is given with the model.
  • Basket inserts: there are inserts for 1 or 2 cups and often also for pods, which can make starting easier.
  • Milk frother: a steam wand froths milk by hand. This takes practice.
  • Cup tray: check whether taller glasses also fit underneath.
  • Grinder: if you want to use fresh beans you usually need a separate grinder. That is an additional expense.
  • Single or dual circuit: dual-circuit machines have separate systems for coffee and steam and are usually larger and more expensive. Entry-level models are often single-circuit with a thermoblock.

Our recommendation for beginners: De'Longhi Dedica Style

The De'Longhi Dedica Style (EC 685) is a compact portafilter machine. According to the manufacturer it is only 15 cm wide, has a thermoblock heating system and is ready in about 40 seconds. It works with 15 bar pump pressure, has a portafilter with inserts for 1 or 2 cups and for coffee pods (ESE), an adjustable milk frothing wand and a height-adjustable cup tray for glasses up to 12 cm.

Our assessment: The Dedica is a popular way into the world of portafilter machines. It is small, easy to understand and needs little space. A coffee grinder is not included, so you use freshly ground coffee, ground powder or pods. The milk is frothed by hand with the steam wand.

How to get started

  • Begin with pods: this is easier until you get a feel for amount and tamping pressure.
  • Vary amount and pressure: both influence the taste. Change only one thing at a time.
  • Use fresh coffee if you want to grind yourself, and warm the cups.
  • Froth milk by hand: this takes a few attempts. Do not let it discourage you.
  • Clean after use: clean the basket and wand according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Who should rather choose a bean-to-cup machine?

Anyone who wants a coffee at the touch of a button in the morning without dealing with amount, pressure and milk froth is better off with a bean-to-cup machine. You will find a comparison of two models in our guide Giving a bean-to-cup machine: Philips 2200 or LatteGo 5400?.
