12 volts: light and handy

12-volt cordless drills are compact and light in the hand. That is pleasant when you drive in many screws, work overhead or inside narrow cupboards. For furniture assembly and most household jobs the power is quite enough.

One example is the Bosch Professional GSR 12V-15: two gears, 20+1 torque settings and, according to the data sheet, around 0.95 kg including battery.

18 volts: more power and hammer drilling

18-volt tools have more power for long screws and larger holes. Models with a hammer function can also drill into masonry – handy if you want to set wall plugs. In return they are a bit heavier.

One example is the Einhell TE-CD 18/40 set: according to the manufacturer up to 40 Nm, 21+1 torque settings, hammer function, two 2.0 Ah batteries and 64-piece accessories in a case. The batteries fit many other tools of the same battery system.

What to look for when buying

  • Two batteries: One works while the other charges – no forced breaks.
  • Hammer function: Only needed if you want to drill into stone or concrete.
  • Weight: The lighter, the more comfortable for long jobs and overhead work.
  • Battery system: If you plan more tools, make sure the batteries fit them.
  • Accessories: Bits and drill bits in the set save an extra purchase.

The right accessories

The right bit for almost every screw comes, for example, in the Bosch 32-piece screwdriver bit set. If you are looking for a complete basic kit, you will find it in the 238-piece tool trolley.

Frequently asked questions

Are 12 volts enough for furniture assembly?

Yes. For furniture, shelves and most household jobs, 12-volt cordless drills are well suited and pleasantly light.

When do I need 18 volts?

If you often drive in long screws, drill larger holes or want to drill into masonry with the hammer function.

Can I drill into concrete with a cordless drill?

Only with a hammer function, and even then rather for smaller holes. For a lot of concrete, a rotary hammer is better suited.

Is a cordless drill a good gift?

Yes, especially as a set with two batteries and accessories – then it is ready to use straight away.
